Title: Heartless (Parasol Protectorate #4)
Author: Gail Carriger
Origins: My Local Library
Summary: [from GoodReads] Lady Alexia Maccon, soulless, is at it again, only this time the trouble is not her fault. When a mad ghost threatens the queen, Alexia is on the case, following a trail that leads her deep into her husband’s past. Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux’s latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines and Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant.
Will Alexia manage to determine who is trying to kill Queen Victoria before it is too late? Is it the vampires again or is there a traitor lurking about in wolf’s clothing? And what, exactly, has taken up residence in Lord Akeldama’s second best closet?

My Review: It feels like I have been waiting for this book for ages! There were so many things left in the air at the end of Blameless I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next one. I’m very excited for the day that the last comes out so I can read all of them in a row. It will be such a different experience than reading them with breaks between.

A lot of the things I liked about this book I’ve already discussed in reviews of the other books. I love the treatment of the supernatural creatures – they’re accepted into society but so wrapped up in the bureaucracy of the time period. I love Lord Akeldama – he always makes me laugh.

The thing with this one is it felt a lot like a filler novel. It is a story on its own but I felt like it was only a vehicle to make time pass until Alexia has her baby. Even so, this book is definitely important to the overall story. I am so excited for the next one as well – it seems everything is about to begin and I cannot wait!
