Title: Shattered Souls
Author: Mary Lindsey
Origins: Received in exchange for an honest review
Summary: [from GoodReads]
Lenzi hears voices and has visions – gravestones, floods, a boy with steel gray eyes. Her boyfriend, Zak, can’t help, and everything keeps getting louder and more intense. Then Lenzi meets Alden, the boy from her dreams, who reveals that she’s a reincarnated Speaker – someone who can talk to and help lost souls – and that he has been her Protector for centuries.
Now Lenzi must choose between her life with Zak and the life she is destined to lead with Alden. But time is running out: a malevolent spirit is out to destroy Lenzi, and he will kill her if she doesn’t make a decision soon.
My review: I received this one as part of an ARC tour, and I have to say, about 20 pages in, I was getting worried. The plot was starting to sound an awful lot like another book I’d read earlier in the year, one I couldn’t even bring myself to finish. The first time it was a book I was reading for fun. I would have really hated to not be able to review it because I didn’t finish. Luckily, this time, I turned out to be wrong.
One of the things that really kept me reading was Lenzi’s witty, sarcastic narrative voice. Every time I started feeling too sorry for her she would turn the mood by saying something so unexpected and so sarcastic that I couldn’t help but laugh at her. One moment she’s floundering and the next she’s bull-heading her way through a situation “faking it ’till she makes it” if you will.
I also really liked Alden, when he wasn’t being annoying. It’s funny – while I love reading about these totally romantic old-fashioned types I just know I would get so frustrated with them in real life. which makes me slightly annoyed. On the other hand his self-sacrificing nature would make just about any girl swoon.
In the end I’d have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and I will definitely pick up the next one when it comes my way.
