Behind the Desk
(My life behind the scenes)

It was a good week! (Well, except for that day when my servers went down and I lost everything since JUNE. But let’s not dwell on that.) I spent a lot of time catching up on things I couldn’t do while I was busy making sure all my apps got in on time. I got to see my best friend from college and we got to watch The Hobbit together. (I need the soundtrack. Like now. KTHXBAI!) AND I am 100% ready for Christmas, shopping and wrapping-wise. Now it’s just bake cookies this weekend and then BRING IT ON! 😀

Last weekend my grandfather passed away. While we expected it for a while since he was 91 and his health has been failing steadily, it’s always difficult. We were happy to celebrate a life well lived, and to have a majority of the family together to celebrate.

This week was pretty emotionally taxing. We spent the week visiting my Grandparents for Thanksgiving and Grandpa’s not doing so good. It was difficult to say the least, to think that the next time we go over there will probably be for the funeral.

  • Monday for  NanowriMondays I discussed how I write and discovered I write conversations best.
  • Tuesday I reviewed Storm by Brigid Kemmerer – Great elemental storyline but very definitely a YA PNR.
  • Thursday I reviewed Seraphina by Rachel Hartman – love me some dragons!
  • Friday I discussed my difficulty writing reviews.

Behind the Desk
(My life behind the scenes)

How is it almost Thanksgiving already? HOW???

Right now I’m hanging out at one of my college friends’ house for the weekend. We haven’t seen each other since August, so it was definitely time. Yesterday we went to a HUGE Christmas craft show and I spent way more than I should have (but seriously, SUCH pretty jewelry). Oh and there were kittens and they let me HOLD ONE!

Me and the kitty

Isn’t it CUTE? SO FLUFFY!!! (Of course, it wouldn’t look at the camera so how would you know? lol)

Still working on those graduate applications. I swear it feels like I will NEVER be done with them…

  • Patti (Parajunkee’s View) complained about obscure music mentioned in books. I never really pay attention to be honest, but her thoughts are interesting.
  • Kristilyn (A Winter Writer) reminded us that to get better at something we must do it (aka practice).
  • Beth Revis (author of Across the Universe) gave us some insight into her writing process – specifically how she comes up with ideas.
  • Danny (Bewitched Bookworms) discussed review requests, and what makes her accept some and reject others.

I love my new job. No joke. I am so much less stressed, and even the people around me have commented on how much happier I seem. This really was the right direction for me. Also a major plus is the ability to listen to audiobooks while I’m working! I went through three just this week, so I’ll definitely be needing plenty of recommendations for good ones there!

In other news, I was kinda hoping to have all my grad school apps in by this Wednesday. It looks like that won’t be happening, but I’m getting close enough that I feel like it will be possible to get them all in before the deadlines at least.

Oh, and THE RADIO IS PLAYING CHRISTMAS MUSIC! I have been waiting for this day for at least a month!

(Blog posts I found awesome since the last post)

This is about two weeks of links, so bear with me. That said, they’re good enough that I couldn’t bear just not sharing them, so keep that in mind.

  • Lisa (Read. Breathe. Relax.) asked if we reread books and why. I most definitely do, because I am a mood reader, and there are some days that I don’t want anything new and difficult – I want safe and comfortable!
  • Kristilyn (Reading in Winter) talked about living with a non-reader. She is incredibly lucky that even though her husband doesn’t read, he’s happy to let her do so and talk about it!
  • KM (One Page at a Time) wanted to discuss small publishers vs. the former “big six”. I found it absolutely fascinating – I rarely, if ever, look at the publisher of the books I really like. As long as it’s good, I’m all for it (though I’m not a huge fan of self-pubs – I’ve read too many that haven’t even been edited!)
  • Kristilyn (Reading in Winter) procrastinated by writing a song about procrastination on her new writing blog, A Winter Writer. She’s really good, plus I love meta songs like that!
  • Speaking of meta – Amanda (On a Book Bender) wrote a discussion post on writing discussion posts.
  • And finally, two geeky I Can Haz Cheezburger posts I just had to share – The Whovian Prayer and The Harry Potter Quiet Book.

GoodReaders’ Digest
(Books I’ve read in the past week and books I plan to read next. Also includes stats for the Unbreaking the Shelves Challenge)

Read:
  • Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel – Zombies that didn’t make me want to lose my lunch for once!
  • Hounded by Kevin Hearne (Audiobook) – I. Want. Oberon! Also, I can enjoy audiobooks! WOO!
  • Hexed by Kevin Hearne (Audiobook) – Not quite as much fun. Not as much Oberon either, maybe there’s a correlation?
  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (Audiobook re-read) – Loved it just as much as an audiobook and the second time around!
  • The Marbury Lens by Andrew Smith – I am SO CONFUSED. Plus it was a little bit too gory for me. It’s definitely not my favorite.
  • Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett (Umpteenth reread) – Yep. Still love it (just had to make sure 😛 )
  • The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen – Need the next book, NOW!

Currently Reading:

  • Until I Die by Amy Plum

Behind the Desk
(My life behind the scenes)

This week has been FULL of ups and downs.

  • Monday I took the GRE. I only did so-so on the math, but I did fan-F***ING-tastic on the English, so I’m hoping that balances out.
  • Tuesday a very close friend of the family died. I’ve been good friends with his grandchildren for going on 8 years now, enough that I always called him Grandpa. Deaths are always very sad, of course, but this one was even sadder for being so sudden – just a few days before his stroke I saw him at church and we were laughing and joking as always. He will most definitely be missed.
  • Friday I finished basic training for my new job (only a few technical things to sort out left) so I can officially begin this week! YAY!
  • Saturday at the chocolate store was completely and utterly awful. Four large corporate orders came in on rush, my boss was in a terrible mood (and passing it along) and therefore refused to help with customers, and none of the machines were behaving right, so I had to make DOUBLE everything just to be sure I got enough that was actually sell-able. THREE MORE DAYS (if I could do math, I’d probably be counting the hours).
  • Nanowrimo starts this week! I was too busy with real life to prep the blog in time, so we’ll see how long I last before giving up (on the writing, not the blog.) If you would like to join me, track my progress, or yell at me for falling behind you can find my profile here. Now if only I had a better idea of what story I was writing…

I went through my “Read” shelf this week and added a TON of sequels that I should have already had on my “series completion” list. So basically, this week is going to look like EPIC FAIL but I figure they were technically on that list already, right? I just didn’t know it.
Read:
  • Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
  • Storm by Brigid Kemmerer
  • Elemental by Brigid Kemmerer

Currently Reading:

  • Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett (still)
  • Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel

Unbreaking the Shelves stats:

  • Beginning total: 65
  • As of 10/28: 59 (WOOOT! Under 60!)

  • Beginning total: 253
  • As of 10/28: 265

Added:

Too many to list. Plus I’m lazy, and they’re all sequels to something I’ve already talked about.
