Have you ever wished you could find that one book that was about _____? Have you ever found yourself wondering what a book with a certain kind of theme or message would be like? That’s exactly what “Wanted” is all about. A semi-regular feature, I use “Wanted” to talk about all those books I wish I could find that nobody seems to have written yet. If you happen to know of some books that fit my criteria, I would love for you to send them my way through the comments!

You know what I used to read ALL. THE. TIME. in high school and haven’t touched now in years? High fantasy! I used to love that stuff – the epic quests, the insanely huge world-building and all that jazz. Now, I know those books still exist, and new ones are written every day. In fact, I have a majority of them on my TBR list to pick up someday. But I’ve mostly stopped reading them, because almost all of them could be used as DOORSTOPS. So, more accurately, what I want is high fantasy that isn’t a million pages long! Anywhere up to, say 500 pages is fine – usually I can get through those in a few days and still manage to get through enough in a year to fill up all my review spots. More than that, and I’m looking at a week to a week and a half per book, making it difficult for me to keep up with my two-reviews-per-week schedule unless I’m quite a bit ahead. And worse, many of these high fantasies feature not one, not two, but TEN doorstops, each topping out between 700 and 1000 pages – it’s just too much! I can’t afford the time! A few less pages, and I guarantee you’d have another reader!

Have you ever finished a book and said “Man, I wish I could ________ like that?” Bookish Bucket List is a semi-regular feature for the things I’ve put on my bucket list and the books that made me do so.

Blackwood cover
Title: Blackwood

Author: Gwenda Bond

Summary: [from GoodReads]

On Roanoke Island, the legend of the 114 people who mysteriously vanished from the Lost Colony hundreds of years ago is just an outdoor drama for the tourists, a story people tell. But when the island faces the sudden disappearance of 114 people now, an unlikely pair of 17-year-olds may be the only hope of bringing them back.

Miranda, a misfit girl from the island’s most infamous family, and Phillips, an exiled teen criminal who hears the voices of the dead, must dodge everyone from federal agents to long-dead alchemists as they work to uncover the secrets of the new Lost Colony. The one thing they can’t dodge is each other.

One of the nice things about paranormal books in recent years is they’ve started diversifying – there’s a YA paranormal on just about any paranormal creature out there (although not quite: I’m still looking for some Elves and some Unusual Shifters). But one kind of paranormal that I would love to see more is the death myth paranormal. Every culture and religion has its own version of what happens when we die, and many of them could be turned into some incredible paranormal novels – in fact a few already have! Take, for example, Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson, the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent, or on a less culturally specific note Croak and Scorch by Gina Damico. I would love to see more paranormal novels exploring the lesser known death myths!

I like my novels pretty diverse, when I can get them that way anyways. Reading a novel with a character that could be characterized as “minority” gives me an opportunity to learn more about them after all! And recently novels have been much better about featuring more “unusual” cultures and people. But one I have yet to see with any prevalence is Native American. I remember when I was still in Elementary school my dad brought me a book called Walker of Timeabout a young boy who travels back to live with his Hopi ancestors, and I loved it! The culture was so different than what I knew and the novel gave me a very different perspective from the dry textbook versions I’d known.

Since then I’ve kept my eyes open for more novels that explore Native American cultures, and as far as I can see, they’re few and far between! Granted, that may be because I prefer a little bit of fantasy, but the Native American cultures have a very rich religion that would make for an interesting fantasy setting, don’t you think?

Everyone, say hello to Briana from Pages Unbound! She’s stopping by today to let us know what she wants to see happen in future novels:

I love reading fantasy. It’s always exciting to enter into a new world where anything can happen and where people can possess incredible powers. It is a place of mystery, wonder, and endless possibilities. However, sometimes the people are just that—incredible, or hard to believe. If you read a lot of fantasy novels back to back, you begin to notice something. Everyone is special. Everyone is chosen. Everyone is the greatest warrior/wizard/king of their time. It turns out all their friends are super-special, too. For an example, you can check out all of Tamora Pierce’s Tortall books. They’re amazing, but I can never decide whether it’s too much, or just completely natural, that all the extraordinary people in the kingdom know each other. What I want, then, is a fantasy book with a protagonist who is not special, or rare, or the most talented at his or her particular skill. But I don’t want an “Everyman” either, because of course that has been done, as well. Check out J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. I want a novel about the sidekick, someone sort of talented who knows all the cool chosen people but is still somewhat on the sidelines. Like Harry Potter told from Ron’s point of view. Does such a book exist? Can it work, or will readers wonder why the book isn’t about Harry? ~ Briana

Thanks so much for joining us Briana!

Are there things you wish more authors would do or use? I have a guest post slot with your name on it! Email me through the contact form, and we’ll set something up!
