My Review:

Hoo boy, am I on a sci-fi kick right now! I got this one out mostly because I want to watch the TV series eventually (Robert Carlyle!) and because I felt like a bad sci-fi nut for not having seen it. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised! For a 90’s film this one’s pretty good!

At first there was a lot of eye-rolling. It’s very obvious this is a 90’s movie (movie making changed A LOT after 9/11, but that’s a discussion for another day…) It also starts seeming strikingly similar to the BBC TV series Primeval which I watched for a while. It’s certainly interesting enough, but I’ve seen it before.

And then I started to get into it and it wasn’t boring anymore. There’s a much bigger story at the heart of all the sci-fi trappings. The pseudo-Ancient-Egyptian culture the team finds on the other end of the stargate has been enslaved for thousands of years by an alien culture far more sophisticated than either culture. The team from earth changes all that, showing them what it’s like to live freely, without masters, and they finally find the will to fight back. They’ve been kept down mostly because reading and writing are forbidden so it takes a while for them to figure out how to communicate – though I did kind of wonder why the expert on Ancient Egyptian culture didn’t think to try speaking to them in Egyptian sooner!

There’s something about this one that makes it a creeper favorite for me. When I first finished it I thought it was pretty good but not OMG AWESOME! But then I couldn’t stop thinking about it – usually I only obsess like that over my insta-loves! And now, looking back, I can say I really liked it. I’d definitely recommend it to any sci-fi fan who hasn’t seen it!

  1. I’m still not sure if this is one I’d watch. I’m okay with science fiction but can usually feel really overwhelmed by it all. I like it in small doses. I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!

Yeah… I know you’re not as big a sci-fi fan as me and that’s okay! I’ll just feed you small doses until you can handle the bigger doses 😛 Although if you can handle understanding Doctor Who, you probably can understand just about anything else I’d throw your way lol.

  2. And now you can watch 9 seasons of SG-1 and 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis! Both are very good (although I prefer Atlantis just because I adore John Shepherd)!

I intend to! Eventually. But there’s so much on my to-watch list that it may be a while. I’m still in the middle of trying to watch ALL THE STAR TREK!
