Have you ever wished you could find that one book that was about _____? Have you ever found yourself wondering what a book with a certain kind of theme or message would be like? That’s exactly what “Wanted” is all about. A semi-regular feature, I use “Wanted” to talk about all those books I wish I could find that nobody seems to have written yet. If you happen to know of some books that fit my criteria, I would love for you to send them my way through the comments!
You know what I would love to read? A dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic that isn’t tech-centered. Seriously, think about it – Divergent, Matched, Delirium, Glitch, etc. – all based around some kind of technology. It’s pretty clear what YA authors are worried about!
It sounds a little weird, I know, but I can think of a few books that have pulled it off. In Tomorrow’s Magic by Pamela Service all tech died in the apocalypse which allowed magic to resurface. John Ringo’s Council Wars series is more post-apocalyptic but when the tech gives out there are genetically engineered elves, dwarves, centaurs, mermaids etc. still wandering around. I think there’s a lot of potential here for good stories – now someone go write more of them!
There really are a lot of technical-savvy post-apocalyptic books out there! Maybe try an Amish book? I don’t know … maybe it’s because authors assume that we’ll be getting smarter as the years go by?
Yeah, I think a lot of authors just assume extrapolation of whatever we have now. I just have a a thing for future dark age type stories – I think there’s something fascinating about the idea of how we would adapt to life without our technology beyond the “chaos and destruction life sucks all the time and everyone dies!” doom and gloom stories, you know?
Agreed. There should be more books about a future world that ISN’T created because of technology. I mean, I know it’ll probably be the death of us, but why can’t the world end because of … oh, I don’t know, puppies?
You should check out Level 2 by Lenore Appelhans – it’s like dystopian but paranormal (not fantasy like you were saying but still :)! More paranormal dystopian types are The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa and Darkness Before Dawn.
I have Level 2 and Darkness Before Dawn on my list but there are SO MANY BOOKS lol I just haven’t gotten to it. I did really like the Immortal Rules though!
Black City by Elizabeth Richards is a sort of combination vampire/dystopian/fantasy book. I have to admit I’m not its biggest fan, but a lot of people do love it (of course!), so it might be worth checking out.
